Clone Freedom Act provides controversy in the Senate
The Clone Freedom Act, a piece of legislation introduced into the early Senatorial drafting process by Senator Apoali Leskirist of Corellia and supported by members of the original Petition of 2000 has become a controversial piece of legislation in the Senate. The legislation would introduce a number of reforms to the Clone soldiers currently serving in the Grand Army of the Republic at the forefront of the so-called "Clone Wars" against the Confederacy. It would introduce a potential new droid army as replacements for the Clone troopers, it would further prohibit cloning of new soldiers, which the bill refers to as "slaves", and provide for citizenship for the Clones and offer them options in regards to military service. Supporters of the Senator include Senator Mon Mothma, the Senator of Chandrilla and others who were original members of the Petition of 2000. Senator Leskirist was reached for comment regarding the CFA and noted the following: " "
You've all seen my voting record, and you
all know there were few more devout in their support for Chancellor Palpatine, and this
mockery of human life we've perpetuated in the Clone Wars. But we were
tricked into birthing - yes,
birthing - an army - whose origins we are
still unclear on - an army whose purpose was
solely to bring Palpatine
more and more power. This bill is not unreasonable. In fact, what's
unreasonable is the bill in
draft form being leaked to the press and slandered, instead of considered and debated upon its ideological foundation."
Members of the Commission for the Protection of the Republic (COMPOR) have rallied against the bill, calling it "...unnecessary and dangerous to democracy." COMPOR rallies have been held across the Galactic Republic in opposition of the bill. Senator Redar Brenau of Kuat was interviewed and stated "The Clones were bred for war and very clearly have a set of pre-programed orders that could easily be used against the Republic. Do we not remember that Order 66 was programed into the heads of the Clones and could have shattered the Galactic Republic as we know it? I respect Senator Leskirist and Senator Mothma but this is not the hill they want to die on. The Senate will absolutely reject this and we will be done with this insane concept."
Varlo Auteds, a political commentator from Anaxes, an ardent COMPOR member and former Senator from Anaxes rallied against the bill while debating fellow political commentator Cadan Tacem, a former Senatorial Representative from Duros. "I'm not sure in what world we consider these clones to not be a threat to democracy." Auteds stated. Tacem was none to pleased with his words and called Auteds a veiled xenophobe and an oppressive as the Trandoshan slavers. Tacem is a well known anti-war and anti-slavery activist and has been one of the biggest supporters of Senator Leskirist's legislation.
GHN resident Senatorial correspondent suspects that the bill will fail when it goes to vote in the Senate but has heard a lot of back and forth that she has no idea what will happen in reality.
