Rank Progression

The Galactic Empire has several pathways for characters to progress: the Imperial Navy (including the Imperial Starfighter Corps), the Imperial Stormtrooper Corps, the Imperial Army, the Imperial Intelligence Agency or Imperial Security Bureau, Imperial Force Users or Imperial politicians.

Writers who choose the path of either the Imperial Navy, Imperial Stormtrooper Corps or Imperial Army should consider two fundamental paths: starting as an enlisted member (Sergeant and above) or as an officer (Lieutenant/Ensign and above). Starting as the extreme lower ranks is not advised and permission is required for starting above the offered starting rank.

Please read all of the Galactic Empire Databank info in this thread and associated Fanon materials to familiarize yourself with the faction. To request a rank elevation, you can submit an application form. This will be reviewed and approved by the Staff Faction Leader (@Aeaolen Kicka).

Note: This is a guide meant to help writers know the quality of what is expected for rank progression.

Requirements for Non-Force User Characters

Promotion within the Galactic Empire is largely dependent on active participation in Galactic Events, Factional Events, Staff Faction Leader approved faction related personal topics and writer discussions with the SFL. Writers should be cognizant that as a leader rises in ranks in the military/intelligence/political world they tend to have less to do.

Requirements for Force User Characters

Promotion within the Galactic Empire for Force Users (FU) characters is largely dependent on their assignment and follows the Dark Jedi path.

Apprentice Inquisitor to Inquisitor
Focus areas: Leadership (Battle Readiness), Force, Lightsaber, Loyalty to the Empire
Requirements:
- 1 storyline demonstrating Force training
- 1 storyline demonstrating leadership skills and/or battle readiness, including a Galactic Event or Factional Event
- 1 storyline demonstrating lightsaber training
- 1 storyline demonstrating the capture/involvement capture of a Force User or demonstrating loyalty to the Empire

Inquisitor to High Inquisitor
Focus areas: Leadership (Mentorship and Command), Force, Lightsaber, Loyalty to the Empire
Requirements:
- 2 storylines demonstrating Force training
- 2 storylines demonstrating leadership through mentoring an Apprentice Inquisitor/Inquisitor
- 2 storylines demonstrating leadership through military command, including a Galactic Event or Factional Event
- 2 storylines demonstrating lightsaber training
- 2 storylines demonstrating the capture/involvement capture of a Force User or demonstrating loyalty to the Empire

Imperial Navy

Recommended starting rank(s): Commander (Senior Commander) or Captain (Senior Captain/Captain of the Line)
-- Writers should consider what vessel they want to start with, if it is on the larger more "important" side they should consider writing as a Captain (Senior Captain/Captain of the Line); if they want a smaller vessel they should consider writing as a Commander either a Lieutenant Commander (Junior Commander) or Commander (Senior Commander).

Rank progression: Commander (either Junior or Senior Commander) -> Captain (Senior Captain/Captain of the Line) -> Rear Admiral (assignment to an Imperial Navy unit or posting as a Systems Admiral/Commodore) -> Vice Admiral (assignment to an Imperial Navy unit or posting as a Systems Admiral/Commodore) -> Admiral (assignment to an Imperial Navy Fleet or posting as a High Admiral of a Sector Group) -> Grand Admiral (assignment as dictated by Staff Faction Leader + writer discussion)

Imperial Starfighter Corps

Recommended starting rank: Flight Captain (Leads a Squadron (12) of Starfighters)

Rank progression:
Captain (posting as a Flight Captain, commanding a Squadron of 12 Starfighters) -> Commander (posting as a Group Captain, commanding a Group of 3 Squadrons or 36 Starfighters) -> Colonel (posting as a Wing Commander, commanding a Wing of 2 Groups or 72 Starfighters) -> General and Vice Admiral (assignment as dictated by Staff Faction Leader + writer discussion)

Imperial Stormtrooper Corps

Recommended starting rank(s): Sergeant (Leads a Stormtrooper Squad of 10 Stormtroopers) or Captain (Leads a Stormtrooper Company or 4 Platoons of 50 Stormtroopers/200 Stormtroopers)
-- Writers should consider if they want to play a specialty Stormtrooper or just a "typical" Stormtrooper. Those specialty Stormtroopers should take note that they'll often be deployed in small numbers.

Rank progression (from Sergeant): Sergeant (Leads a Stormtrooper Squad of 10 Stormtroopers) -> Lieutenant (Leads a Stormtrooper Platoon or 5 Squads of 10 Stormtroopers/50 Stormtroopers) -> Captain (Leads a Stormtrooper Company or 4 Platoons of 50 Stormtroopers/200 Stormtroopers) -> Major (Leads a Stormtrooper Battalion or 4 Companies of 800 Stormtroopers) -> Colonel (Leaders a Stormtrooper Regiment or 4 Battalions of 3,200 Stormtroopers) -> Colonel/High Colonel (Leader a Stormtrooper Legion or 4 Regiments of 12,800 Stormtroopers) -> Vice Marshal (assignment as dictated by Staff Faction Leader + writer discussion)

Imperial Army

Recommended starting rank(s): Sergeant (Leads a Squad of 10 Imperial Army Troopers) or Captain (Leads a Company of 4 Platoons of 160 Imperial Army Troopers)

Rank progression (from Sergeant):
Sergeant (Leads a Squad of 10 Imperial Army Trooper) -> Lieutenant (Leads a Platoon of 4 Squads of 40 Imperial Army Troopers) -> Captain (Leads a Company of 4 Platoons of 160 Imperial Army Troopers) -> Major (Leads a Battalion of 4 Companies of 640 Imperial Army Troopers) -> Colonel (Leads a Regiment of 5 Battalions of 3200 Imperial Army Troopers) -> High Colonel/Major General (Leads a Battle Group/Division of 4 Regiments of 12,800 Imperial Army Troopers) -> Major General + Brigadier General + Lieutenant General + General (assignment as dictated by Staff Faction Leader + writer discussion)

Imperial Intelligence Agency or Imperial Security Bureau

Recommended starting rank: Imperial Intelligence Agent/Operative or Imperial Security Bureau member
-- Progression within the Imperial Intelligence Agency or Imperial Security Bureau is wholly dependent on the writer as the upper ranks tend to be less involved in actual "field work" then the lower ranks. The writer should have a discussion with the Staff Faction Leader should they have questions about where the start with these organizations.

Imperial Force Users

Recommended starting rank(s): Apprentice Inquisitor or Inquisitor

Rank progression:
Apprentice Inquisitor/Inquisitor (Largely dependent if assigned/discussed with another writer) -> High Inquisitor -> Chief Inquisitor (assignment as dictated by Staff Faction Leader + writer discussion) -> Grand Inquisitor (assignment as dictated by Staff Faction Leader + writer discussion)

Imperial Politician

Writers who are interested in role-playing a character within the Imperial political sphere should approach the Staff Faction Leader and have discussions with them about the role they want their character to play and what interests they might have. This goes for all "political" ranks and roles.
