Overview of the Galactic Alliance
The Galactic Federation of Free Alliances, known as the Galactic Federation, the Federation, the Galactic Alliance and sometimes just the Alliance. The Federation has been the dominant galactic government since mid-50 ABY. The Federation is ruled by a democratically elected Chief of State who is elected by the Galactic Federation Senate and a popular vote held across all Alliance member worlds. The Chief of State is both the head of government and head of state of the Federation. The executive branch of the Federation is made up of the Office of the Chief of State and the Galactic Alliance Advisory Council, which serves as a "cabinet" of the Federation and advises the Chief. The ministries of the Galactic Federation are as follows: Ministry of Galactic Affairs, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Finance and Economics, Ministry of Health and Social Services, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Space and Exploration, Ministry of Education and a dozen other smallers offices.
The Senate is made up of elected or sometimes appointed of strategically important worlds, systems and sectors throughout the galaxy, these Senators are assisted by Representatives who are appointed or elected depending on the sector, system, planet. The Galactic Federation Senate is chaired by the First Senator who is nominated and elected by the majority vote of the Senate. The Senate is responsible for bringing all legislation to discussion and vote, the First Senator is responsible for the operation of the Senate. Officially each Sector has a Senior Senator and Junior Senator as well as Representatives who are non-voting members of the Senate but are eligible to speak and sit as members of committees and sub-committees, but this does not necessarily hold true.
The judicial branch of the Alliance is the Court of Justice, the highest court of the Galactic Alliance and is chaired by the Chief Justice, known as the "Grand Justice". The Court of Justice has 10 seats plus the Chief Justice. While the Court of Justice stands independent of the Galactic Senate and the Chief of State, the justices are all approved by the Galactic Alliance Senate. The Galactic Alliance created the Court of Jedi known commonly as the "Jedi Court" for matters related to the New Jedi Order and is a component of the Court of Justice, granting it authority from the highest court in the Galactic Alliance.
The military of the Galactic Federation is encompassed by the Galactic Federation Defense Forces (GFDF) which comprises the Galactic Federation Defense Fleet, the Galactic Federation Army, the Galactic Federation Special Forces and the Galactic Federation Marine Corps. The Galactic Federation Defense Forces Central Command is the highest command of the military and the Supreme Commander of the Galactic Federation is responsible for the overall direction of the military. The GFDF also encompasses the independent branches of the Galactic Federation Intelligence Service and the Galactic Federation Security Service.
