Zenith circled around to the side to see the Interrogator begin to descend from the recent attack that he and the other fighters had done. The comms came alive with all kinds of cheers and excitement at what they had been able to accomplish. He watches as the ship goes down, only to see another ship, the Avalanche below it. Capitalizing on the combat high that the other fighters were experiencing, Zenith turned on his comms to speak once again.

"Alright boys and girls, don't relax just yet. We aren't done here. I see another ship that needs to be taken down and it is right below this one. R9, do you know anything about what that smaller ship is? I have never seen one like that before."

After a while, the console on the X-Wing begins to light up and writing begins to form on the screen. "What you are seeing is a Vindicator Class Imperial Heavy Cruiser. They are like the smaller version of the Star Destroyer that the squadron had just attacked. Although, it would be wise to take caution Master Valentis. The Heavy Cruiser comes with a multitude of armaments that can rip through fighters and ships. And from what I am gathering from the ship's exterior, there seems to be some electromagnetic interference coming from it."

"An electromagnetic interference? Well, thank you for the warning, but we aren't doing a full-frontal assault on it. We are going to attack the back of it, aiming for that engine. We just have to do it the old-fashioned way, without a targeting computer." Zenith looked down at the ship and started to set up an attack run on monitor, letting R9 transmit the data to the other fighters.

After a little bit, one of the fighters call back on comms. "This plan is even crazier than the last one that you came up with, but hell, we took down that big ship real good, so why not do it again with a smaller one, count me in!" This along with all of the other fighters chiming in unison was all that was needed.

A look of determination appeared on Zenith's face. He responded to all of the fighters in kind. "Alright everyone, close S-Foils and set attack speed to full throttle. We are going to use the rest of our payload of torpedoes to cripple that ship as well. Try to hit the engine as best as you can without the targeting computer."

With that, the attack commenced, each fighter flying in unison, divebombing the Heavy Cruiser. As expected from the ship, a volley of turbo-laser fire was firing from the top and to the back, as the fighters flew toward its engines. The turbo-laser fire began to ramp up in ferocity, with some fighters unfortunately meeting their ends due to some lucky shots, but the fighters were getting close to the engines. At that pivotal moment, all X-Wings and Z-95s slowed down their descent and began to unload a volley of torpedoes against the engines of the cruiser, pulling up or flying against the side of the engine to get away from being burned to a crisp.

Character - Kylar Thrane
Location - Sword of Alderaan, Jedi Flagship

They were in the thick of it now. Kylar had ordered all main capital ships to charge the enemy formation, save for their reserve Venator-carrier Vanguard. His gambit had paid off, albeit with sacrifices. Hours ago they had baited the Imperials into sending near their entire TIE fighter squadrons and all their frigates and corvettes forward to destroy the NR fighter squadrons. And the Imperials had been successful, with their frigates and elite pilots chewing thru the aged NR fighters to pieces.

But then the first trap had sprung........the X-wings had been unleashed.....Kylar's Jedi pilots had been unleashed. They tore into the TIE formations with a fury and to ensure their survival, Kylar had broken all naval convention and rushed two (2) of his heavy capitals forward. Foerost's Bane and Viper's Nest had torn thru the light Imperial frigate line, utterly shattering its center and space-side formation. Multiple Raiders and Lancers lay floating in space, too damaged to continue the fight while the outward Nebulon-B had been destroyed. But not without cost. Foerost's Bane had wrecked half their ship tanking fire from the Krakenguard and Gladiator and now tried to engage with the other half. They could last ten (10)......maybe another fifteen (15) minutes under such withering fire, and they would have to abandon ship.

Viper's Nest was also blazing along her bottom hull. She had rotated 90 degrees to port, to shield the Vengeance and Sword of Alderaan from the Imp destroyer fire, while focusing all she had on the Emperor's Wrath. Meanwhile, the Avalanche tore her underside to shreds.

Relief had arrived with Zenith's squadrons hitting the Avalanche. While not being able to lock-on due to Imp electronic jamming, the X-wings bravely rushed in to attempt to take out the Avalanche's engines. Unfortunately, without lock-on targeting and the heavy anti-fighter lasers streaming from Avalanche, only a few torpedoes struck the engine array to knock out a primary sub-light engine. The rest either went wide or hit the hull structure causing light damage though did knock out a few turbolaser turrets. However, the Avalanche was responding in kind. While difficult to track the smaller ships, it’s anti-starfighter cannons barked out deadly bursts of concentrated fire, chewing thru most of the slower Z-95 head hunters and even claiming a few X-wings. Zenith would need to maneuver his men quickly to stay in the fight.
Kylar to Zenith, I’m routing additional X-wings to your position. Without lock-on targeting, aim wide and try to overwhelm her shields on one side or the other so you can knock out the laser batteries. If it gets too hot, break off and join the Venegance on the attack.

"Time to finish off the line and push in. Let's show this Imps our true strength before their remaining squadrons get wise and we spring our final trap." He stood in his command chair as he gave his orders, "Target the closest Carrack, charge primary heavy amplifier arrays 1 and 3.....standby.......FIRE!!!"

The specialty weapon on the front of the Halberd-class lashed out in white hot beams of destruction, tearing thru the nearby Imperial Carrack with the first burst piercing a section of its main hull and the second slicing into its engine array until the ship shuttered and all its lights and guns fell silent.

Kylar looked over at his display consul as the Vengeance pulled a similar two (2) shot burst to disable a nearby Lancer. Checking back on the tactical display, he noted the Imperials had destroyed several corvettes and frigates planet-side, with heavy damage to the Arquiten Liberator, forcing its withdraw to the rear of the engagement. Meanwhile, the Corellian Gambit and Nemesis were still locked in deadly combat, though Kylar wished the Halberd command crew would change strategy and bring the Imp Victory-class to its knees. "This is what happens when I give under trained NR officers a new ship," he thought to himself. Still, the starfighter situation was improving planetside, so their Y-wings could start making runs on the Nemesis.

Meanwhile space-side, a set of Imperial and Jedi corvettes had gotten into an all out brawl which drew into a close tie. Though as the last Raider corvette bowed out of the fight, one of the CR-90s foolishly strayed too close to the Krakenguard. Its gunners wasted no time in shredding the Jedi corvette in half, before returning deadly fire back to the dying Foerost's Bane.

"Our gallant crews have bought us enough time. Spring phase 3 of the operation. Order our CR-90 Enduring Fire to full burn engines and begin sending location telemetry to CMD Tarek Rau's squadrons."

Kylar keyed a few crystal icons on his kyber displays to bring up long-range comms. "Tarek, we are sending you jump coordinates now. Bring in all flights and prepare for immediate engagement up on the Krakenguard. The Imps are still jamming our targeting computers, so prepare fast runs to dumb-fire. Overwhelm that destroyer and then turn your attention to the Gladiator."

"By your will, lord. I had wondered when you would call us to glory. Receiving telemetry data now. A few minutes until jump", Tarek responded.

Tarek’s X-wing contingent had been waiting on the outskirts prior to the battle even beginning, per Kylar's strategy. Now it was Kylar’s turn to distract the enemy. "Helm, take us under Viper's Nest and bring us to flank the Emperor's Wrath starboard side. X-wing squadrons 3, 7, and 9, form up and follow us. Begin immediate attack runs on the Emperor's Wrath. Target their starboard shield and hit it with all the torpedo volleys you can."

The Sword of Alderaan surged forward underneath the shattering debris from Viper's Nest. "Admiral Thrane to Viper's Nest. You've done well lads. Keep the guns blazing as long as you can, but I clearly see the ship won’t last long. All remaining crew members abandon ship......that's an order!"

"Yes sir, Admiral."

The Venator continued to lip forward to stay between the Emperor's Wrath and Avalanche, physically blocking Avalanche from firing on the Sword of Alderaan. With the maneuvers in place and his ship rocketing forward, Kylar took direct control of the helm to glide the Sword of Alderaan in an angled drift past the Emperor's Wrath on the starboard side. He would be letting the Imperial's "cross his T", but with the Halberd's narrow profile, it was the best defensive option to protect the hull while still bring all guns to bear forward. "X-wing flights, drop your torpedoes, fire at will!! Ion cannons, follow up with hard hits to weaken the shield over their primary starboard batteries. Spin up Heavy Amplifers 2 and 4.......strafe their heavy starboard batteries. FIRE!!!"

Red torpedo streaks lanced out from the X-wings into the Emperor’s Wrath starboard shields, thundering with blue shimmers. The Sword of Alderaan’s heavy guns followed suit, hitting the shields in weakened locations until they buckled. Then the fire-lance of energy from the heavy amplifiers surged forward thru the breach to destroy several of the main starboard heavy turbolasers before dissipating. The amplifiers were indeed powerful, but Kylar had used four (4) of his six (6) heavy weapons, and they required an immense cooldown period.

Well done! I’ll keep our position here and steadily maneuver us closer to the Emperor’s Wrath…..*BBOOOMMM*, vibrations shook the Sword of Alderaan as the remaining starboard heavy and medium turbolaser batteries from the Emperor’s Wrath bore down on them. “Admiral, the forward shield is failing!” But Kylar was determined, “As it will. We knocked down theirs and they will level ours. Now is the time to finish this fight. We hold here and take the fight to them. All batteries coordinate your targets on enemy cannons and start aiming up their bridge tower. X-wings, focus your fire on the bridge tower shields. I want their commander to know we are here and an immediate threat. All emergency crews standby, this is going to be a rough slugfest.
Kylar turned back to his COMSAT to see flickers of light entering the far side of the battle. “Finally Tarek! We have the enemy fully engaged. Swarm them!

Yes, lord. You heard the Admiral, men. From the Ashes!”, Tarek Rau responded. The battle cry was renewed across the fleet as the CDR Tarek Rau joined the fray with the final blow: another wave of 100 fresh X-wings.

Rogue Squadron, surge forward to engage any TIE squadrons the Imps have held in reserve. Red Squadron, move to engage the Gladiator. Iron Squadron, follow me and prepare torpedoes! Our target is the Krakenguard’s port side. Hit her shields hard to create openings and then go for gun batteries. Stay nimble and fast, swarm and overwhelm their gunners with targets. Go now!!!

Rogue squadron and its support broke off to to tango with the TIE fighters, while over seventy (70) X-wings broke by flights to start attack runs on the two (2) closest Imperial warships. As red torpedoes sparked like flares in the night, the Imperials would find themselves enveloped in close combat on all flanks by the blazing symbol of the Phoenix.

For the Order!!”, the pilots shouted.
For the New Republic!!!!

xwings closing in.jpg

The entire strategy was in motion. The Jedi-led X-wings were pouring over the Imperial rear formation, in the attempt to overwhelm any hope they had of continuing the fight, and edging on the verge of threatening the survival of the Imperial ships.......

Character - Imperial Admiral Thane
Location - Emperor's Wrath, Imperial Flagship

Thane slammed his fist with frustration at against the nearest command console. "Curse these Jedi traitors. This isn't just unconventional.....their tactics are sheer madness. They are just throwing ships away!" His frustration came not from the surprise of the X-wings. No, Imperial Intelligence had heard rumors of a new starfighter type, which is why he had deployed the vast array of anti-starfighter frigates in the advanced picket line, and had held back to reveal their new electronic sensor jamming suite. The mighty X-wings roared in to save their cruisers from his TIE squadrons only to find they could not utilize their torpedo advantage. And yet knowing this, the Jedi-NR pilots still had flown head first into certain death.......or would have been if his net of frigates had held.

But these NR commanders had charged their destroyers straight into close quarters with his frigates and had sliced massive holes in his anti-starfighter net. Yet, the enemy starfighters had been slowed, and while sacrificing frigates, his destroyers and cruisers had easily outgunned the approaching Victory and Venator......yet they barely returned fire! It seemed like the crews were fully content on dying to destroy his frigates.......if under Imperial command, such officers would be court marshaled and possibly sentenced to death for just wanton misuse of Imperial vessels.

As the fighting raged, Thane focused back on the bridge view port to survey the field. "Ensign, order Krakenguard and Gladiator to intensify ion cannon fire on Foerost's Bane, and clear Krakenguard to use any means necessary to secure that ship. We are taking back our Emperor's Victory-class destroyer. Speed must be the key. Our enemies understand that clearly......." Thane paused, as he suddenly saw the Vengeance and Sword of Alderaan slip from behind the frame of the Viper's Nest at flank speed to move to engage both him and the Gladiator.

His anger fumed, but he channeled it into stern and solid commands, "All gunners, focus fire the Viper's Nest, the command tower! Drive that excuse for a ship away from our hull and claim the kill for the crew of the Emperor's Wrath!" Immediately, the numerous turbolaser emplacements turned on the approaching Venator and fired in a single massive volley! Again and again all the Imperial guns burst in unison. By the 3rd volley, the Venator's bridge tower supports had shattered and the command spires floated away from the ship. The 4th and 5th volleys shoved the Venator safely away from the Emperor's Wrath hull, while piercing straight thru the quarter deck into the engineering spaces and shattering the ventral hangar armor wide open!! A cheer rose throughout the Imperial destroyer, as their foe rolled way in buckling heap of metal.

"So much for the remnants of the Old Republic. For our Empire", he said aloud. But he did not waste time, as he quickly brought his attention to the X-wings pelting the outer shields with torpedoes and beyond.......beyond lay the Jedi Flagship! This opportunity could not be wasted.

"Deploy what few TIE squadrons we have in reserve across the fleet to occupy their X-wings. And bring us about. I want all gunners to standby. We'll finish off this Jedi Commander just as we did their Venator. With pure imperial might!"

Yet, as the Emperor's Wrath shifted their engine thrust to turn their bow at the Sword of Alderaan, the enemy would not hold to engage but continued to maneuver ever further on their starboard flank. "Increase engine power, reverse thrust to swing us about faster!"

"We're trying sir, but the enemy cruiser is faster. No matter how we pivot, they stay ahead of us, and limit what guns we can bear. If we keep chasing, they may pull us out of position completely sir." Thane grimaced, "And that might just be their plan. Weapons free on the starboard batteries. Burn their cruiser down. If they want to stay close, we still have the advantage......" **SSSSTTTTTTKKKKK*** Shearing beams of light suddenly cut the space between the ships, as the Sword of Alderaan's amplifer batteries tore into the main heavy turbolasers on the starboard side of the stardestroyer. "Ground artillery?" Admiral Thane puzzled with wonder, "Have they mounted ground defense cannons on to their space frame? If so, close quarters may not be beneficial until we learn more. Where are our TIEs?"

At his moment, the ship's COMSAT started wailing alarms frequently. The COMSAT ensign smartly reported, "Admiral, we have multiple contacts emerging from hyperspace on the far side of the engagement zone. Dozens of fighter craft. Krakenguard is reporting nearly 100 enemy X-wings pouring over their bow and into our lines with torpedo runs!"

Admiral Thane immediately understood. "So, is was their net......they have surrounded us with X-wings and saved their proton torpedoes for our large destroyers, thus not requiring to lock-on, with such a large target. Signal all operable destroyers, cruisers, and support craft. Begin to steadily fall back to tighten our lines. The enemy has us surrounded and we cannot hope to both engage their destroyers and protect the wounded Interrogator." As the command staff issued his orders to the fleet and his gunners exchanged heavy fire with the Sword of Alderaan, Admiral Thane stared at bridge port of the enemy flagship off to right, wondering if the enemy commander was a proper officer, also standing at the helm as he was. He sighed with disappointment as the damage reports came in from across the fleet.

One way or another, this battle would soon be over.

As the call came in over the comms, he looked out toward where the fleet was amassing and saw the X-Wing squadron coming into view. Zenith radioed back to Kylar. "My squadron is out of torpedoes, but I think we can try and plow through with our lasers set to maximum. We will do our best to knockout all of the laser fire that we can on the ship."

As Zenith finished the conversation, he turned on his comms to let his squadron know what the plan was going to be. "Alright everyone, we are going to help our friends out in front by trying to take out as much of it's offensive capabilities. Switch all power to lasers and take it to those turbolasers. If it gets too hot to handle, break off the attack and head back to the Vengeance. Do you all understand?"

It wasn't long before all of his squad mates had chimed back in, in agreement with this plan. R9 began to whir around and chirp as words began to appear on the screen. "You will need to be very careful with how you approach this ship, especially with it's laser fire being nearly accurate." Zenith smirks a little as he looks at the screen and then back at the ship. "Then we will have to fly close to the hull and fire upon it, hard and fast." Suddenly, the screen flashed with words, along with R9's chirps and whirs. "This is a very crazy plan you have come up with and I hate that I am a part of it... but it seems to be the only thing that could actually work..." Zenith smirked again and looked over his shoulder to the droid and chuckled a little. "I am glad that you can see it my way R9. Don't worry though, I'll keep ya safe and sound back there. Alright, let's do it, switch all power to the lasers."

At that moment, after setting what needed to be set, all of the ships in Zenith's squadron began to fly toward the Avalanche from the back. Their attack pattern had them flying low to the hull and firing off their lasers to pick off turbolasers in their pathway. In turn, the turbolasers began to fire back to pick off each ship that went by. Some ships unfortunately met their ends, while others flew off as planned, back to rejoin the Vengeance. It was just a handful of ships, including Zenith's own X-Wing that completed the Avalanche's gauntlet, plowing the road of turbolasers for the next attack to commence. As he was passing by, he watched as each of the X-Wings from the larger squadron sped past him and his squadron to attack the Avalanche itself. His own squadron flew toward the Vengeance and pulled back to watch what was to occur.

His cruiser’s hill shuddered from the turbolaser exchange with the destroyer Emperor’s Wrath. Still maintaining his flanking maneuver, the Sword of Alderaan kept its firing position fixed on the aft-starboard side of the Emperor’s Wrath, restricting the Imperial destroyer’s firing solutions while his ship continued to pick apart its gun batteries and armor. X-wing’s danced across the destroyer’s port side as well, continually punishing the larger ship’s shields and subsystems. Soon his smaller craft would have the gun advantage if this dragged on, however Kylar knew his craft’s hill was battered and extending the battle to complete victory may cost him the ship. That was an unnecessary risk.

His comm crackled with Knight Zenith’s status report, and Kylar could see the COMSAT pings of the X-wing squadron giving it their all to punish and wound the Avalanche as much as possible. “We’ll done, Zenith. You and your pilots have more than earned your wings this day. Fall back and shield the Vengeance from fighter attack. The enemy doesn’t have many TIEs left, but still safeguard her flanks. You have done well. I will see you after the battle, as we need to discuss promotions.”

Zenith and his squadrons had fought hard for this victory, and Kylar would ensure every pilot was honored. Additionally, Zenith’s sudden leadership on the field was to be commended. This Jedi Knight had much potential.

With the Avalanche weakened, the Vengeance bore down her exchanging fierce fire in a head-on attack. Kylar watched as hot-beams lanced from the heavy amplifiers to shred more of the Imperial cruiser’s batteries at point-blank-range and one shot pierce deep into deck near the command tower. And with their X-wing reinforcements swarming all over the few remaining combat capable Imperial ships, Kylar knew it was over.

They had won…..against a superior foe with heavier firepower and projected newer tech, yet it had been the X-wings and his unconventional maneuvers that had broken the heavy fleet lines of the Imperials. The old standard of combat that all officers had employed throughout the Clone Wars had been overturned in a single battle. Lessons were here, and Kylar was sure the Imperials had learned them too. The nature of naval engagements would be forever changed from the static slugfests of the last war to fast hard hitting strikes and constant maneuvering. Kylar turned back to his viewport as his own gun crews unleashed the Sword of Alderaan’s remaining two (2) amplifier shots into the Emperor’s Wrath, silencing a bank of cannons along the central axis and cutting up the command tower. The pristine white-grey Star destroyer was starting blacken like fish on a fire.

“Admiral Kylar, this is Blue Squadron. We have returned from planetside and our corvette is outbound with the wounded Senator. He is badly injured but the medics have stabilized and will rush him to the closest emergency center.”

“Well done”, Kylar responded. “Have your

As the Imperials on the planet side were covered by TIE Fighters and TIE Bombers, Captain Drale assumed command as Admiral Thane prepared to jump the Imperial fleet to hyperspace. Drale barked orders, despite the chaos, Drale remained calm and collected. Drale had one goal: ensuring that as many of the Imperial vessels from the ground were aboard the various Imperial vessels that were prepared to receive them. 23% Rear Admiral Thane had begun inputting the coordinates for a hyperspace jump across the badly wounded Imperial fleet, most of the vessels would survive but would require extensive repair. 39%. Drale ordered the launching all remaining TIEs, only a handful who had returned or were kept in reserve for issues or what have you, were launched and they provided additional coverage.

Drale recalled that the moments felt like an eternity as the hyperspace calculations were being uploaded to the Imperial flotilla. 53%. "Damn it! Faster!" Drale cried out to his engineering team aboard the Krakenguard and he slammed his fist on a control panel. His temper flared through and he shook his head. 61%. Drale motioned to his TIE Operations Officer to re-call all remaining TIEs to the various vessels. The Interrogator had already prepared to jump to hyperspace due to damage and had to utilize whatever remaining energy it had to complete the coming jump. 75%. Drale watched as groups of TIEs drop remaining ordinance and fire what they could, the Imperial vessels launched all possible weapons to act as a further screen for the TIEs, both those returning from the ground to space and space to the vessels. 87%. Drale realized that this was going according to plan, some plan that is.

They had secured the Imperial delegation and significantly wounded a New Republic Senator and certainly proved that the Empire was a capable opponent. 94%. The Empire had accomplished what they wished on Thyferra, something that the New Republic and the Jedi Order would come to fear when it was announced. 100%. The calculations were completed and what remained of the beaten Imperial fleet had jumped to an undisclosed location, the New Republic would now have to sow up the pieces of a highly upset and politically powerful independent Thyferra.
