En route to Anaxes...

Eean slumped in the booth, his spirits as low as the hum of the Starlight Run's engines. With nothing to do but watch his lightsaber twirl aimlessly through the air, he couldn't help but feel bored out of his mind. The passenger lounge was empty and silent, making him feel even more dull and apathetic.

As the Consular-class Cruiser continued on its journey through hyperspace, Eean tried his best to ignore the monotony of the crew's conversations. They were discussing some sort of special operations unit they were supposed to pick up at their next stopover, but it all seemed like white noise to him. Eean had always been criticized for being too relaxed and carefree, but he couldn't help who he was... or so he kept saying. Right now, though, he wished something would happen to break the dullness that surrounded him. Anything to shake him from this dreary stupor.

As the ship emerged from hyperspace, Eean barely stirred in his seat. His blue and brown tunic draped as he casually lounged, unbothered by the ship's gradual stop. He guessed they had arrived at their first destination, but couldn't muster up any enthusiasm for it. He was hardly thrilled about having to train with the military, he preferred to contribute to the galaxy in a more subtle way than engaging in warfare. But he understood the need, as tensions continued to escalate each month the Republic needed anyone able to fight.

What had happened in the last year could be summed up in a single word, clusterfuck. Since the start of the war, it had been almost non-stop, but at least that made sense. All this shadow work, the betrayal, the chips, an Empire rising from those loyal to Palpatine and his reforms, it was all too much to handle. Others seemed to handle it fine but not her, not Akul. The once lively unit had grown cold, where once was laughter was nervous looks, of course, trust is the single most important thing in any fighting unit. Three years of trust gone in one revelation, all those thoughts and fears from the start of the war coming back like a stalking monster. Okera should have trusted her instincts, but then who would have listened to a paranoid togruta who knew nothing more than anyone else besides feeling? It was a hard discussion when things finally fell apart.
"Would you have followed that order?"
"I suppose I would have no choice. I'd ask you the same but I know your answer, sir. I don't want to think about how it could have gone." That unspoken knowing, the certainty that the troopers knew. Okera would have been a risk, she would have had to die, but that would not be an easy fight.

When they got orders to depart for Anaxes their feelings were mixed, it was a perfect opportunity to train and rest. On the other hand, the unit was still out for blood against the empire, those disgraceful curs wearing the uniform of their allies and using civilians as bate. They wanted to find who sold them out, bring them back and show them that no one messes with Akul company. It was Okera's duty to keep things in order, to get the unit focusing on the long term of another war rather than the satisfaction of one hunt. The unit needed to train, it was always good to prepare for the next fight as now they were against organic OPFOR which changed their tactics a fair amount.

The Jedi was a wildcard dropped on her lap at the last minute. Take a kid and train them to be a soldier, yeah like that didn't feel like a sting from a sour order. The Ryloth mission was a shit situation and whilst no one did anything wrong the order was probably sour about their loss. Giving the kid to Akul company was a double-edged sword. She could mould them more to her way of thinking, but equally, the Padawan could influence her or even be reporting back to the order to get them removed. The Occam's razor though was that Akul was the only unit nearby doing exercises that was able to take on the Jedi and had the added bonus of a non-clone CO

Regardless of her thoughts and feelings, and all the chaos happening in the galaxy around them, Okera had a job to do. The ship docked and the unit quickly loaded up, their unit gear already prepared to be taken aboard so the unit shuffled into the ship, in their blacks, carrying duffel bags full of their personal kit.

The crew passed by as they moved to assist the new passengers board the transport. What was idle chatter just a moment ago turned into a racket, Eean perked. He sat up, force-pulled his lightsaber, and attached it to his belt. Hearing all the commotion he decided to investigate, not as if he had anything better to do.

As he left the lounge he noticed the tall togruta delegating the rest of the soldiers who had just boarded. He leaned against the frame of the blast door and watched as the women and men loaded their things, realising it had been quite some time since he had interacted with anyone from the military. His piercing golden eyes gazed around the room as he fell into a daydream, noticing the various gear and equipment they brought. Whenever the idea of undergoing military training crept around, he found himself lost in his own mind and rocking back and forth on his heels. It was no different this time. His mind raced and he could feel his body tense up.

Okera quickly set about organising her team and getting them on quickly and efficiently. She knew the Jedi was watching them, an intuition well-honed in the warrior. Focusing on the task at hand, making sure everything was squared away and the unit was ready to go. Only then did she turn her attention towards the padawan behind them. Moving closer, allowing the Pantoran to get stock of her.
"Padawan Estris?" She questioned, getting an affirmative before continuing. "I am Captain Vekra, I have been instructed to take you aboard for our training" Knowing nothing of the young man and only a few years his senior, they weren't entirely sure how they would react to being under their command. Still, plenty of time to figure that out before they got to the proving grounds. Of course, she knew that she and by extension, the unit would be under heavy scrutiny, with this padawan most likely reporting back to the order directly.

For a moment, Captain Vekra's introduction completely eluded the young Jedi as he gave a vague nod upon hearing his name, still deep in his thoughts. He suddenly realized the Captain was addressing him, causing his head to jolt in response as he attempted to quickly compose himself. "Oh erm, I think so...?" he hesitated. He didn't exactly pay much attention during his briefing. He knew which transport he had to take and the planet it was on but that's about it. "Captain... was it?" He was unsure of how to address her as he fumbled over his words. "You can just call me Eean," he said with a willed little smile. Following formalities was never his strong suit and he often struggled with knowing the appropriate response. He understood that the Captain was technically his superior, at least during the training though he hadn't the faintest idea of how he was meant to act.

Their lekku moved, in what was roughly the equivalent of an eyebrow raise. It was impossible to miss the Jedi's startle, more concerns running through Okera's mind as she suppressed a sigh. Goddess, what had she gotten into?
"You think so? You think you're Padawan Estris, or you think so I'm taking you for training?" Okera remained formal as she looked over the young Jedi, sure she was one of the first to drop formalities when situations allowed, but this was not such a time.
"Captain Vekra yes. You have been briefed on what we will be doing correct?" Leaning in slightly with a tilt of her head. As most of her unit would later warn, the thing with Okera was that she didn't just become an officer, she started as a squaddie and worked her way up. Not many troopers had such prestige, and she'd been through it all with the unit. So it was at that moment that she was gauging the Jedi, gauging just how much she was allowed to do, with the equal measure of how much she could get away with.
"To reiterate, you are being placed with our unit for combat exercises so you can better understand the troopers that you will lead. The sudden onset of the war did not allow this training for your predecessors and many lives were lost as a result. As such the New Republic has learnt from the past, and you are one of many Jedi going through similar, more militant, training." There wasn't a single lie in her statement, perhaps a little harsh, but ultimately true. She had seen it first-hand, butting heads with Jedi on more than one occasion. Okera was welcoming of the reforms, making moves to be part of the group in charge of organising her. Perhaps this was a good thing for her ultimatly.

Eean let out a sigh of defeat in response to Okera's questions. He shook his head slightly but paid close attention to her explanation of his training. "Yes, I'm Padawan Estris." He briefly considered Okera's take on previous Jedi leadership, he knew they were right and he had always found it odd that his fellow Jedi were so hastily recruited for the war. He himself only served briefly on the odd mission whether by luck or misfortune and spent most of the war at the temple studying.

"It is a fair assessment" he smiled lightly, "We should've been better trained." He was haunted by stories of the Jedi's blunders during the war, but he found solace in the reforms brought about by the Phoenix Legion and the New Republic. Not all Jedi were fit for warfare and it was right for the Republic to realise that, but it did make him wonder. Would he be fit for it?

"Anyways... What's your plan to whip me into shape Captain?" He knew his playful teasing may or may not go down well with Captain Vekra but he was willing to take the chance. What's one more disgruntled officer? He thought as a smirk spread across his face.

No plan survives contact with the enemy. Okera smiled, she had her expectations of what she was going to face, and this wasn't it. Taking a little guilty joy in the padawan's agreement with her view, it took a lot to swallow one's hubris.
"Well, first of all, make sure you are certain of who you are. Work on that confidence of yours" Easing up on the young Jedi, realising she didn't need to hold rank over them and it would be much better to make them as welcome as possible.
"Run you through your paces and get you learning how to work as a team. You need to understand what it takes to be a soldier, once you know that then we can get you learning how to lead. Now Eean I want to be clear about something, it is okay to pull out if it gets too much. If you realise it's not for you that's fine not everyone is cut out to be a soldier. That's why I fight because not everyone can" She gestured for him to follow and moved towards some of the mustered troops.
"I guess that means your first lesson is that discretion is the better part of valour"

The troopers of Akul Company regarded Eean with interest and even kindness. Some bore the weight of a long war, some were fresh to the fray but had been through hell, and only a handful were not clones.
"So this the greenie under our wing hu? Doesn't look like much" Even though it was a jab at the Jedi it was said in good faith. "Warrant Officer Huxton, you can call me sir though."
"Hux be easy on them" A soft chuckle at her second.
